Recognition of Skills and Experience
There are several processes that allow students to have their current skills and experience recognised.
Mutual Recognition
Mutual recognition is the process that recognises qualifications or Statements of Attainment issued by another Registered Training Organisation that are the same as the competencies in the program the student is enrolled in.
To receive credit for previous study, students need to be enrolled in the program and provide certified copies of their qualifications, Statement of Attainment or Statement of Results to the institute.
Students cannot receive credit for their whole program of study, at least one competency must be achieved through normal enrolment or Recognition of Prior Learning.
Credit Transfer
Credit transfer is recognition for study already completed which counts towards further study.
If you are seeking credit at Brisbane North Institute of TAFE, before enrolling, please contact us to find out the necessary application procedures.
If you are seeking credit at university for your TAFE studies, before enrolling, you should contact the relevant TAFE institute and university to make sure you have correct and up-to-date information, and to find out the necessary application procedures. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Want to be recognised? use your existing skills, work and life experiences to get the qualifications your deserve.
Recognition of Prior Learning is the process that recognises a student's current skills and experience regardless of where and when the learning occurred. Students can base their application on any combination of formal or informal training and education, work experience or general life experience. RPL has many benefits:
- you can finish your courses earlier
- your study loads and costs are reduced
- you can take on additional study leading to a second qualification
- by identifying your current competencies, RPL can effectively target training requirements.

Schools to TAFE
All schools offering accredited vocational education training are Registered Training Organisations. All results for accredited training issued by Registered Training Organisations are recognised by TAFE institutes through the Mutual Recognition Process.
TAFE to University
At Brisbane North Institute of TAFE, it's our mission to help you on your pathway to greater possibilities.
If you haven't had the opportunity to enter university direct, Brisbane North Institute of TAFE can help put you on your pathway to university.
TAFE graduates can continue their studies by articulation to university and in some cases obtain credit transfer to reduce the time it takes to complete their degree.
Credit transfer is recognition for study already completed (for example at TAFE) which counts towards further study (for example a university degree).
TAFE Queensland has developed strong links with universities and credit transfer arrangements are in place between TAFE Queensland and Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, Australian Catholic University, James Cook University and other regional universities across a broad range of vocational training areas.
