TAFE Queensland has partnered with leading surfing academies and schools to allow you to apply skills gained in exercise science, physical training, gym instruction and sports injury rehabilitation studies to a surfing experience. You will learn the specifics of surfing from leading surfing coaches and instructors and will actively participate in the sport. You’ll also learn about surfboard construction, meteorology, swell and weather forecasting, nutrition for athletes, the principles of sports psychology, and how to develop and instruct strength and conditioning programs for amateur and professional surfers. Entry requirements

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 3+ on all skills or other - For a list of all English Language test accepted by TAFE Queensland International
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Students should be a minimum of 18 years of age. Student visa applicants under the age of 18 will be accepted where they demonstrate that they will be accompanied by a parent, legal custodian or a suitable relative who is aged 21 or over. Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You are also required to have the following prior to commencement of studies;

  • Laptop or tablet (if applicable)

Timetable

Timetables may be available online or may be provided to you at your program orientation.

Your timetable may change every semester and you must be able to manage your commitments to ensure attendance at all your classes.

Timetables will be different across TAFE Queensland locations. This is an example of what a course timetable could look like -  

Monday and Tuesday 8.00 am - 4.45 pm and Wednesday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm.

Or

Wednesday and Thursday 8.00 am - 4.45 pm and Friday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm

Your timetable will include approximately one day surfing per week.

Placement

Some qualifications require students to participate in vocational placement to successfully complete and achieve their TAFE Queensland award. If vocational placement is a course requirement it will be organised by your School/Faculty and you will be provided with all the information you need to prepare. Remember you are responsible for ensuring you have met all the requirements to participate in vocational placement.

During these placements, you may become familiar with information that is confidential to that workplace (for example financial or business affairs, personal affairs and family background of staff and clients, technical information, trade secrets, know-how, formulae, processes, ideas, and inventions). You must not divulge any confidential information that you become aware of during a placement. Breaches of confidentiality will be considered to be acts of behavioural misconduct and may result in disciplinary action.

Important Information

Blue Card: Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000 (Qld) contains a new law to help ensure that people seeking to work with children are suitable. This is called 'the working with children check'. Any person wanting to work in regulated employment, as a paid employee, a volunteer, or a person carrying on a regulated business, will have to fill out a Blue Card application form consenting to a criminal history check prior to his or her appointment or engagement (See ‘Relevant Documents below). Further details can be obtained at the following link for Blue Card Services or by telephone on 1800 688 275 (Free call). Students will be unable to attend Vocational Placement until they hold a valid Blue Card. Once enrolled Students need to make an appointment for the Teacher to sight their ID and sign their Blue Card application form. The teacher then arranges for the application to be lodged with Blue Card Services for processing and final approval.

Application Process

Applying to TAFE Queensland International is easy. You can submit an application at any time, but get in early as positions are limited. Follow the steps below to apply to study at TAFE Queensland.

Before you apply

  1. Check the evidence required to apply for your visa

    Before you apply to study at TAFE Queensland, you should check what documents and evidence you will need to provide to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) to support your visa application.

    How to check what evidence you will need to provide to obtain a visa:

    • Visit the Student Visa (subclass 500) page on the DIBP website
    • Scroll down to the Document Checklist Tool
    • Select the country listed on your passport
    • Enter 03020E in the Education Provider CRICOS code field
    • Answer the final question: I am one of the following
    • Click the Display Evidence button
    • Read through the Documentary Evidence List to find out what you will need to submit with your visa application

  2. Review Admissions criteria and key dates

    Some courses require you to meet additional entry requirements eg. Submit a portfolio or artwork with your application. Please check individual course requirements via the Course page.

  3. Prepare your certified supporting documents

    If you are an international student applying directly to TAFE Queensland, you will need to include certified copies of the following documents to support your application:

    • Copy of passport
    • Educational certificate and academic records
    • English language test results

  4. Applying as a mature aged student

    Mature age students (at least 21years of age and with work experience/other qualifications) may be admitted into a program without meeting the formal academic requirements.
    The following documentation is required to support your application:

    • Current CV
    • References on company letterhead from current or previous employers

    Where previous study/employment was conducted in English, submit a certified letter from the educational institution/employer confirming the language of instruction/employment was English.
  5. Under 18 students

    International student visa applicants under the age of 18 will only be accepted where they demonstrate that they will be accompanied by a parent, legal custodian or a suitable relative who is aged 21 or over. For more information visit Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.

  6. Submit your application

    Submit your application and supporting documents through TAFE Queensland's online application portal or through a TAFE Queensland Registered Agent who can guide you through the enrolment process.

    Accepting your Letter of Offer

    Note the expiry date for acceptance.

    • Meet all conditions as outlined in your Letter of Offer and Acceptance
    • Read and agree to the Terms and Conditions of your Letter of Offer and Acceptance
    • Read the International Student Refund Policy
    • Read the TAFE Queensland student rules
    • Pay the tuition fees as stated in your Letter of Offer
    • Pay for Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as stated in your Letter of Offer, or arrange your own OSHC for the duration of your visa.

    To apply for your student visa, visit the DIBP website and click Apply Now. Follow the steps to create your ImmiAccount and apply for your visa.

    Travel to Queensland and attend Orientation

    Once you have received your student visa, you can travel to Queensland ready to attend the TAFE Queensland International Orientation.

Orientation

At the beginning of each semester orientation events are hosted across TAFE Queensland locations.

TAFE Queensland recommends you arrive two weeks prior to your course start date to allow time to organise and settle into your accommodation and prepare for your studies.

International Orientation details are emailed to you prior to commencing your studies or they can be accessed via the Orientation Schedule.

Program specific orientations are also conducted one week prior to the start of study. This is an opportunity for you to meet your teachers and classmates, get to know your campus, and familiarise yourself with your study schedule.
