To be eligible for up to 510 hours of free English classes in the AMEP you must meet the criteria set by the Australian Government (listed below).

Adults (18 years +) need to:

  • have a permanent visa or an eligible temporary visa
  • have little or no English
  • register for AMEP classes within 6 months from the date your visa starts
  • start classes within 12 months from the date your visa starts

Youths (15 - 17 years) need to:

  • have permanent residency or an eligible temporary visa
  • have little or no English
  • register for AMEP classes within 12 months from the date your visa starts
  • start classes within 12 months from the date your visa starts

If you contact us by phone to check your eligibility:

  1. Have your visa or travel documents with you.
  2. Say, "I am interested in AMEP classes."
  3. Our staff member will check your eligibility. They will need to know your name, date of birth and visa details.
  4. If you are eligible they will organise a face to face enrolment interview to check your English level.
  5. If your English level meets the eligibility requirements you will be enrolled in a class at TAFE Queensland, or offered other study options.

What if I am not eligible?

If you are not eligible for the AMEP you may still be able to study English at TAFE Queensland, but you may need to pay a fee. For information about paid English language classes contact your closest TAFE Queensland.
